Three-dimensional desktop morphometric models for the Arctic Ocean floor

Abstract:
Abstract. We present results of the first phase of an ongoing project to create a system for three-dimensional (3D) geomorphometric modeling of the Arctic Ocean submarine topography. In this phase, we developed a testing, lowresolution desktop version of the system. We utilized a small, 5-km gridded digital elevation model (DEM) extracted from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) version 3.0. From the smoothed DEM, we derived digital models of se… Show more

“…In this article, the presented approach is illustrated by the example of the small DEM. Our experiments with larger DEMs (Florinsky & Filippov, , ) (Figure ) demonstrated good performance of the approach. For example, for a 5‐km gridded DEM of the Arctic Ocean floor and adjacent territories (1,161 × 1,161 depth/elevation matrix; 1,347,911 points) (Figure b), a smoothed polygonal object included 21,529,600 faces (1,345,600 original faces × 4 during the first subdivision × 4 during the second subdivision).…”
