Three-dimensional acquisition of large and detailed cultural heritage objects

Abstract: Cultural heritage digitization is becoming more common every day, but the applications discussed in the literature address mainly the digitization of objects at a resolution proportional to the object size, using low resolution for large artifacts such as buildings or large statues, and high resolution for small detailed objects. The case studied in this paper concerns a huge physical model of imperial Rome (16 × 17.5 m) whose extremely small details forced the use of high resolution and low noise scanning, i… Show more

“…WisLM questions the recall of the story, the metamorphosis that occurs when memories are converted to speech; it is in essence a work addressing the subjectivity of memory and the past. This is a line of work inspired by previous developments of the use of technology for the preservation of culture, of historical heritage or social collective, such as Rome Reborn [106], Pompeii [149], the Forbidden City [125] and Uruk [45]. There is a lineage of works focusing on the reconstruction of sites historically relevant for human heritage.…”

“…Generally speaking, the digitization of cultural heritage often involves large objects that must be scanned with high precision [83,96]. The acquisition systems must be portable so it can be used in situ.…”

“…[25][26][27] Systems like GPS (Global Positioning System) are rarely considered in the field LSDM although they are actually employed in many kind of measurement of large-scale structures specially in shipyard for shipbuilding industry and industrial ports, as well as for topographic and architectonic surveying. 15,[28][29][30][31][32] Currently, we can say that there is an overlapping between the areas of traditional tracking systems, for example GPS, and systems commonly used for LSDM application. In fact, just as GPS can be used for dimensional measurement, many typical LSDM systems are used for indoor tracking.…”
