Three Different Modes of Avatars as Virtual Lecturers in E-learning Interfaces: A Comparative Usability Study~!2010-04-10~!2010-05-24~!2010-09-02~!

Abstract: Most of recent e-learning applications are predominantly based on textual and graphical metaphors to communicate the learning material in its user interfaces. Previous research demonstrated that incorporating both visual and auditory sensory channels in the interaction with e-learning interfaces could enhance the usability and users' learning performance. Also, the presence of humanoid virtual lecturers in e-learning interfaces was found to be attractive for e-learners. This paper describes an empirical evalua… Show more

“…Adding redundant gesture was found to increase verbal recall of the material, as well as to increase the social qualities attributed to the agent (Buisine & Martin, 2007). A comparative study of three e-learning interfaces, one incorporating a talking head, one incorporating a full-body avatar, and one with two talking heads interacting with each other, suggests that e-learning materials incorporating full-body teaching agents that speak and gesticulate are the most efficient, effective and engaging (Alseid & Rigas, 2010).…”

“…Embodied Agent tutors impact learner satisfaction and engagement within IVEs by simulating the relationship between student and tutor (Alseid & Rigas, 2010). A learner's social judgement of interactions with an EA impacts perceived co-presence and satisfaction, with human-like representations regarded as more social than non-human avatars (Nowak, 2004).…”
