Three Applications of V.3 Google Maps: Just for Display of Data, or Analysis as Well?

Abstract: A question about the analytical capability of Google maps is answered for three examples of pin maps, and polyline and polygon maps that are computer-programmed with the third version of the Google maps application. One map reads XML data stored on the home server, whereas another downloads its data from an online fusion table, and the third includes pre-programmed data. Each map permits users to query mashup layers after the map has loaded. However, an analytical capability comparable to GIS should require us… Show more

“…Google Maps is a Geographic Information System application provided by Google which used to find locations or regions in the world, accessible via an internet browser, and can pinpoint a specific location based on latitude and longitude [10]. A way of determining the distance between two points noting that the earth having degrees of curvature is the Haversine Formula, a method in spherical geometry for calculating the distance between two points on a curved surface such as the Earth, based on their longitude and latitude.…”

“…Moreover, such users may use maps to their advantage in carrying out nonsocial activities such as demanding ransom money in acts of kidnapping, murder or target killing. These horrendous acts can be executed after collecting location/route information from maps [11], without being noticed as Google Maps allows access from any place without being verified. Similarly, Google…”

“…In addition to statistical analyses of exterior housing qualities in this study's subsequent sections, summary data for geocoded houses are mapped online at http://web2.uwindsor.ca/courses/sociology/phipps/agp/research/threegooglemaps.html#GWCUShqmap with Version 3 of Google maps in one of three examples of this application [58]. Almost instantaneous display of coloured pins for up to 800 houses on a map represents a significant upgrade over V.2, in which pins might have appeared sequentially on the screen in one browser, or in their classes in another (e.g., [59]).…”
