Threats of Tar Spot Complex disease of maize in the United States of America and its global consequences

Abstract: The emergence and spread of new crop diseases threatens the global food security situation. Phyllachora maydis, one of the three fungal pathogens involved in Tar Spot Complex (TSC) of maize, a disease native to Latin American countries, was detected for the first time in the United States of America (USA) in 2015. Although TSC has been previously reported to cause up to 50% of yield losses in maize in Latin America, the impact of P. maydis alone on maize yield is not known yet. However, there is a possibility … Show more

“…Modeling the risk of new and emerging pests and diseases on production, productivity, and food security is an important topic that is getting more attention (Duku, Sparks, & Zwart, 2016;Mottaleb, Loladze, Sonder, Kruseman, & San Vicente, 2019;Mottaleb et al, 2018;Yigezu et al, 2010;Yigezu & Sanders, 2012). However, for most crops, there is a lack of integrated crop-pest models or even data on the effect of pests and diseases on yields to calibrate and evaluate models.…”

“…In addition to reconfirmation at the same locations in 2016, the pathogen was also reported in Florida (Bradley, 2016; Hansen et al, 2016; Miller, 2016) and Minnesota in 2017 and 2018 (Dr. Martin Chilvers, personal communication). There have been no reports of yield losses caused by P. maydis alone so far; however, Mottaleb et al (2018) have hypothesized that if TSC did form in the USA by the association of M. maydis with P. maydis , a loss of only 1% of the country-wide grain production would equate to 1.5 million metric tons worth US $231.6 million.…”

“…En años subsiguientes, la enfermedad fue reportada en los departamentos del Petén, la región del Valle del Polochic en Alta Verapaz, en Jalapa e Izabal (Red SICTA/IICA/Cooperación Suiza, 2011). Como referencia, bajo el supuesto de que M. maydis llegue a los Estados Unidos, la pérdida potencial por cada 1% de reducción en producción se estiman en 1.5 millones de Tm de grano y US$ 231.6 millones (Mottaleb et al, 2019).…”
