Threats from antibiotics: A serious environmental concern

Abstract: Antibiotics are bioactive substances, used as human and animal medicines for illness prevention, disease treatment and growth promotion. They are considered to be pseudo persistent given their continuous input in the environment. Antibiotics enter agro ecosystems through several routes such as wastewater irrigation, soil application, animal manures or bio-solids which are mostly biologically active thus creating potential risks to the environment. They are present in different environmental matrices at low con… Show more

“…Thus, the conclusions from this experiment are not surprising. An immediate conclusion would therefore be that antibiotic pollution should be considered a global concern not only in the context of pathogen resistance and human health [22] but also for processes involving magnetic field sensing such as migration in the air, on land, or at sea, pollination, habitat choice, etc.…”

“…Antibiotics are also extensively used in hospitals, being one of the groups with higher loads in hospital wastewaters [51]. This therapeutic group is particularly critical as it can promote antibioticresistant bacteria (ARB) propagation into public wastewaters, breeding with the negative consequence of curative effects of antibiotics against humans and animals pathogens [53]. In Spain, the consumption of antibiotics ranged from 22 DHD in 1992 to 19.7 DHD in 2009, with an extraordinary increase in fluoroquinolones [54].…”

“…Antibiotic is characterized with incomplete metabolism within human body thus, it is abundantly discharged with wastes into the environment (Gomes, Costa, Quinta-Ferreira, & Martins, 2017;Mandaric et al, 2017), both antibiotics and personal care product form components of municipal wastewater (Balakrishna, Rath, Praveenkumarreddy, Guruge, & Subedi, 2017;Wang, Huang, & Wei, 2018). PPCp exists in the environment at a very low concentration (Richardson et al, 2017), they can however be a source of serious health concerns such as drug resistance development, endocrine disruption and carcinogenicity (Bai et al, 2018;Inyinbor, Bello, Fadiji, & Inyinbor, 2018).…”
