Threat to Gender Representation: Identity and Identification

Abstract: To investigate the effect of a threat to gender identity on the use of defense mechanisms, college students were given false feedback regarding their sex-role identity. Male and female students who were given gender-contrary feedback showed a marked increase in the use of the defense of identification, as compared to students who were given gender-consistent feedback. Further, both affect change and the use of identification was a function of the degree of discrepancy between feedback condition and conscious g… Show more

“…However, Cramer (2000) argues it is critical to study defences in relation to how individuals deal with stress. Defence mechanisms have been utilised within social and developmental psychology areas such as attachment responses among children (Cassidy & Kobak, 1988;Sroufre & Waters, 1977) and mothers (Eagle, 1995;Fonagy, Steele, & Steele, 1991) and identify formation (Cramer, 1991(Cramer, , 1998. More recent studies explore defence mechanisms with highly vulnerable population groups.…”

“…To illustrate, Bosson et al (2009) found that men who received gender-threatening feedback were more likely to hit a punching bag harder than men who did not receive this threat. Because we anticipated harassment would cause defensive gender-role identification as well (Cramer 1998), it follows that a second chance at a task that provided an opportunity to affirm "maleness" would evidence defensive behaviours or psychological compensation, as well. Thus, when given another chance to prove their strength (or masculinity), results suggest that men in the gender-role harassment condition had more motivation to do so.…”

“…In accordance with a social identity perspective, we anticipated that after experiencing gender-role harassment, participants would be motivated to restore the injured aspect of the self and engage in identification processes (Branscombe et al 1999;Cramer 1998;Ellemers et al 2002). Thus, we predicted that harassed participants would express greater identification with being male than non-harassed participants.…”

“…Validity has also been demonstrated in empirical investigations in which an experimental manipulation produced predicted changes in defense mechanism use (Cramer, 1991b(Cramer, , 1998aCramer & Gaul, 1988;Luciano, 1999).…”
