Threat of arsenic contamination, salinity and water pollution in agricultural practices of Sundarban Delta, India, and mitigation strategies

Abstract: The paper through a critical appraisal of the agricultural practices in the Indian Sundarban deltaic region explores the tripartite problems of arsenic biomagnification, salinity of arable lands and ingress of agrochemical pollutants into the freshwater resources, which endanger the health, livelihood and food security of the rural population inhabiting the delta. The threefold problem has rendered a severe blow to the agrarian economy consequently triggering large-scale outmigration of the rural population fr… Show more

“…But amid these frequent climatic events and somewhat expected changes, the social and economic landscape of the islands has changed rapidly with the infusion of globalised systems of providing 'solutions' to localised problems like salinity intrusion. The agro-business lobby, with its emphasis on highyielding variety (HYV) seeds, has introduced and supported agri-system services like fertilisers and insecticides (Nath et al 2021). The lobby's stronghold over the market has marginalised the smallholder farmers and their indigenous variety seeds as well as their traditional knowledge of the ecosystem.…”

“…The spatial distribution map represents 460.56 km 2 area covers high risk categories (Sample.no. 1,3,17,18,24,25,27,31,34,40,42,44,47,55,57). Medium-risk categories occupied 2919.62 km 2 area, and the remaining 26.18 km 2 area covers low-risk categories (Figure 2).…”

“…The groundwater is a significant causal factor in climate change because of its proportional steadiness in quantity and quality [2]. There is a freshwater reserve in the groundwater that is susceptible to unmanageable abstraction [3,4]. Today, the scale of groundwater reduction is unknown across the globe [5].…”

“…The EF analysis demonstrated an anthropogenic source of metal buildup in the Sepang River mangrove sediments. The EF of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Mo, Ni, and Pb exhibited enrichment from numerous sources, which might be attributable to industrial discharges, mangrove exploitation, aquaculture operations, agricultural inputs, or fertilizers(Nath et al 2021). In all sampling locations, the EFs of As (EF values 9.89-23.65) and Mo (EF values 4.74-12.03) exhibit severe to excessive enrichment.…”
