Thoron (Rn-2 20) measurements in the atmosphere and their application in meteorology

Abstract: With new equipment which allows the continuous recording of the atmospheric thoron content down to 0.5. 10-14 C/1, the thoron content of the atmosphere, at different levels was measured at the Meteorologisches Observatorium des Deutschen Wetterdienstes in Aachen. The measurements were carried out from June until September 1964.The results show a close relation between the thoron content and the meteorological variables. The thoron concentration and its decrease with height shows a remarkable diurnal variation … Show more

“…Plant transpiration produces radon and thoron gases (Allen et al, 1964), which in turn produce ion pair production. Therefore, the air ion curve of both the polarities increases from early morning and reaches maximum at noon rather than night (Israel, 1965;Israel et al, 1969). Positive ions can be produced by various kinds of friction: between air masses, between air and sand or dirt particles swept up by the wind, and between weather fronts that march endlessly across the globe.…”

“…0.055 Bq m -3 (range 0.028-0.19 Bq m -3 ), from 157 random atmospheric samples in Germany. In early studies the dependence of 212 Pb concentration on wind direction and its application to meteorology was investigated at some locations in Germany [11,12]. As mentioned above, however, there is a lack of information on the variation of thoron progeny concentrations with time on a long-term scale.…”
