The majority of previous studies into the movement of Byzantine lead glazed ceramics in this political landscape have relied on typological classification to infer provenance; however, the scope of these studies has been hampered by two factors: the widespread practice of emulation and an inability to assign precise geographic provenance to the majority of wares with any degree of confidence. Glazed ceramics are ubiquitous in the medieval archaeological record in the Mediterranean. The effects of lead volatilisation during firing of glazed ceramics on non-destructive PXRF (portable X-ray fluorescence) are evaluated using 25 Byzantine Cypriot glazed ceramics. Significant spectral interferences reduce the number of discriminating elements for multivariate statistical analysis, limiting the capacity of non-destructive PXRF to resolve compositional differences. Nonetheless, non-destructive PXRF of glazed wares has the potential to expand provenancing studies where significantly different geology is present or for appropriate archaeological questions.

The study of Medieval and Post-Medieval pottery in Greece has been much neglected until quite recently. Only in the last decade or so has interest in the historical and cultural information presented by the remains and artefacts of these periods grown. In the Cambridge-Durham Boeotia Project, based on intensive field survey, much attention has been paid to deserted village sites of the Post-Roman era. In this article a selection of the Medieval and Post-Medieval surface pottery samples at one Boeotian site will be described and discussed. The ceramic data from the field survey are combined with and interpreted in the light of information obtained from Ottoman tax registers and other written sources. Also an attempt is made to explore the possibilities of formulating conjectures about the change in pottery function during the period from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century.
