COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake and Associated Factors in Sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence from a Community-Based Survey in Tanzania

COVID-19 is a major public health threat associated with the increased global burden of infectious diseases, mortality, and enormous economic loss to countries and communities. Safe and efficacious COVID-19 vaccines are crucial in halting the pandemic. We assessed the COVID-19 vaccine uptake and associated factors among community members from eight regions in Tanzania. The interviewer-administered questionnaire collected data. Multiple logistic regression models determined the factors associated with vaccine uptake. The median age of 3470 respondents was 37 years (interquartile range of 29–50 years) and 66% of them were females. Only 18% of them had received the COVID-19 vaccine, ranging from 8% in Dar es Salaam to 37% in Simiyu regions. A third (34%) of those vaccinated people did not know which vaccine they were given. Significantly higher rates of COVID-19 vaccine uptake were among the respondents aged 30+ years, males, and with a history of COVID-19 infection. Unfavorable perceptions about vaccine safety and efficacy lowered the rates of vaccine uptake. Setting-specific interventions and innovations are critical to improving vaccine uptake, given the observed differences between regions. Efforts are needed to increase vaccine uptake among women and younger people aged less than 30 years. Knowledge-based interventions should enhance the understanding of the available vaccines, benefits, target groups, and availability.

BackgroundInvestigating the spatial distribution of SARS-CoV-2 at a local level and describing the pattern of disease occurrence can be used as the basis for efficient prevention and control measures. This research project aims to utilize geospatial analysis to understand the distribution patterns of SARS-CoV-2 and its relationship with certain co-existing factors.MethodsSpatial characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 were investigated over the first four waves of transmission using ESRI ArcGISPro v2.0, including Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) with Moran’s “I” as the measure of spatial autocorrelation; and Kernel Density Estimation (KDE). In implementing temporal analysis, time series analysis using the Python Seaborn library was used, with separate modelling carried out for each wave.ResultsStatistically significant SARS-CoV-2 incidences were noted across age groups with p-values consistently < 0.001. The central region of the district experienced a higher level of clusters indicated by the LISA (Moran’s I: wave 1 – 0.22, wave 2 – 0.2, wave 3 – 0.11, wave 4 – 0.13) and the KDE (Highest density of cases: wave 1: 25.1-50, wave 2: 101-150, wave 3: 101-150, wave 4: 50.1-100). Temporal analysis showed more fluctuation at the beginning of each wave with less fluctuation in identified cases within the middle to end of each wave.ConclusionA Geospatial approach of analysing infectious disease transmission is proposed to guide control efforts (e.g., testing/tracing and vaccine rollout) for populations at higher vulnerability. Additionally, the nature and configuration of the social and built environment may be associated with increased transmission. However, locally specific empirical research is required to assess other relevant factors associated with increased transmission.

The purpose of the study was to compare anxiety, depression, self-efficacy and mood between students at the Faculty of Physical Education in Poland and Algeria during the Third Wave of the COVID- 19 Pandemic, as well as to compare the intensity and quantity physical activity. It was also important to examine relationships between self-efficacy and other psychological variables, and self-efficacy and physical activity in the two groups. The following questionnaires were used to assess psychological constructs, self-efficacy and physical activity level: Mood State Profile (POMS), depression (Beck Depression Inventory), anxiety states (STAI), self-efficacy (GSES), a physical activity questionnaire. The research results show that there where statistically significant differences between Polish and Algerian students in anxiety and mood state. There were also statistically significant differences between the groups in the intensity and quantity physical activity. Based on the results of students’ self-efficacy in relation to states of mood, it turned out that anger and vigour are a significant predictor of a sense of self-efficacy of Algerian student, but among polish students only vigour is a significant predictor of a sense of self-efficacy. The comparative study showed statistically significant differences in each of the mood scales. In data on physical activity during the pandemic, all variables showed statistical significance, but physical activity did not turn out to be a significant predictor of psychological variables in the study. It can be assumed that undertaking increased physical activity is a kind of preventive measure in reducing mood disorders and relieving depressive episodes.
