Objective: To examine the relationship between third-molar agenesis and different skeletal malocclusion patterns. Materials and Methods: Pretreatment records of 1046 orthodontic patients (aged 13-17 years; mean age, 14.07 6 1.27) were used. Third-molar agenesis was calculated with respect to genders, number of missing teeth, jaws, and skeletal malocclusion patterns. The Pearson chi-square test was performed to determine potential differences. Results: Among the 1046 subjects, 237 subjects were diagnosed with third-molar agenesis (22.7%) with no statistical gender difference (P . .05). It was more common in the maxilla than in the mandible or in both jaws (P , .01). The prevalence of patients with a third-molar agenesis was the most commonly found type (P , .001). The prevalence of third-molar agenesis in those with a Class III malocclusion was significantly higher than in those with Class I or Class II (P , .05). However, there was similar prevalence among the hyper-divergent (24.5%), normal (23.8%), and hypodivergent (19.2%) groups (P . .05). Conclusion: These results suggest that agenesis of the third molar does not depend on vertical patterns of the skeletal malocclusions, but does depend on sagittal skeletal malocclusions in this orthodontic patient population. by accuracy? Do population differences in dental maturity infl uence accuracy? There is an urgent need for an evidencebased reference to address some of these questions. The fi rst aim of this study was to calculate the bias (difference between dental and real age) of age-estimating methods that use mandibular third molar (M3) root formation. The probability of being at least 18 given M3 root stage is also of interest. The second aim was to apply diagnostic tests of accuracy showing how root stage discriminates between individuals at least 18 years of age and those younger and to apply this knowledge to predict the likelihood of age 18 for a single individual. For this part of this study we used a separate reference sample of 1,663 radiographs. We propose an age interval for M3 root stages to aid interpretation of the term 'on the balance of probabilities' . We highlight the similarity in M3 apex maturity between world groups from published data and illustrate how a small group difference in average age has little impact on the confi dence interval of estimated age for an individual.

Pôle Tête, Cou, chirurgie plastique, chirurgie des brûlés, service d'odontologie, CHR Metz-Thionville, hôpital Bel-Air, Thionville, France (Reçu le 5 juin 2014, accepté le 28 septembre 2014) Résumé -Introduction : Les tétracyclines sont des antibiotiques à large spectre, connues depuis les années 1960 pour provoquer des colorations dentaires lors de l'odontogenèse. Leur prescription est contre-indiquée chez les enfants de moins de 8 ans et les femmes enceintes. Depuis les années 1990, les traitements contre l'acné inflammatoire modérée à sévère chez l'adolescent et le jeune adulte font systématiquement appel aux tétracyclines et ses dérivés semi-synthétiques. Un cas de colorations radiculaire et coronaire de troisièmes molaires visualisées après avulsion est rapporté dans cet article. Observation : Nous rapportons ici le cas d'une patiente âgée de 17 ans présentant des colorations jaune d'or en bandes au niveau coronaire et radiculaire de ses troisièmes molaires découvertes après leur avulsion, non présentes chez sa soeur jumelle. Ces dyschromies ont fait évoquer la prise d'un traitement à base de tétracycline. L'interrogatoire médical a confirmé la prise d'un traitement contre l'acné à base de lymécycline, dérivé semi-synthétique des tétracyclines, non pris par sa soeur. Discussion : La localisation et la teinte de la dyschromie concordaient avec la prise du traitement ; tout ceci était étayé par l'absence de coloration chez la soeur jumelle. Même si les colorations dentaires dues aux tétracyclines sont connues depuis longtemps, aucun article dans la littérature ne fait référence à des colorations qui seraient dues à la lymécycline.Abstract -Root and coronary stainings of the third molars caused by tetracyclines: case report and literature review. Introduction: Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum antibiotics, known since the 60s to cause tooth staining during odontogenesis. Their prescription is forbidden in children until 8 years of age and pregnant women. Since the 90s, treatments for moderate to severe inflammatory acne in teenagers and young adults always involve tetracyclines and their semi-synthetic derivates. This article relates a root and coronary staining case involving third molars discernible after being removed. Case report: This case report concerned a 17-year-old female patient with golden yellow strips which stained the third molars' roots and the crown. The staining was discovered after their extraction and was not present on the wisdom teeth of her twin sister. These dyschromias called to mind the absorption of a tetracycline-based treatment. Medical interrogation confirmed the intake of lymecycline (a semisynthetic tetracycline)-based treatment for acne which her twin sister was not treated with. Discussion: The dyschromia's localisation and shade agree with the taking of the treatment. Moreover, the lack of staining on the sister's tooth backs this assertion up.
