Third Hands-on Seminar on Basic Research for Clinicians at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Rhinologic Society: Development of Basic Research Using Sinonasal Tissue

Abstract

The Japanese Rhinologic Society has held a "Hands-on Seminar on Basic Research for Clinicians" since 2014. These seminars are planned with the aim of raising the motivation and research skills of clinical otorhinolaryngologists toward basic research, and in turn to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration through research with universities. Fortunately, there has been a high level of anticipation for these seminars and on a postseminar questionnaire many attendees indicated that they would like the seminars to continue. The third seminar in this series was held at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Rhinologic Society (Utsunomiya).As in the previous seminars, there were three themes, each of which had demonstrations in respective booths.After the seminar, participants completed a survey. The seminar content was well-received, with all participants rating it as "Good" or "Very good." About 20% of participants said they would like the demonstration time to be longer, but in the actual seminar the finishing time was extended by about 20 minutes. This was because of the detailed responses to questions and requests for demonstrations from participants. Participants were also asked about their current research environment, and fewer than 10% said they were satisfied with this environment. This result is similar to those in the previous seminars. The experimental techniques currently used by participants are typically methods that are already common, such as tissue staining, flow cytometry, and cell culture.Key words hands-on seminar for basic research in rhinology, Western blotting, murine sinonasal anatomy, immunofluorescent staining, questionnaire survey （2017 年 8 月 16 日受稿，2017 年 9 月 15 日受理）
