Thioxanthones are bioisosteres of the naturally occurring xanthones. They have been described for multiple activities, including antitumor. As such, the synthesis of a library of thioxanthones was pursued, but unexpectedly, four tetracyclic thioxanthenes with a quinazoline–chromene scaffold were obtained. These compounds were studied for their human tumor cell growth inhibition activity, in the cell lines A375-C5, MCF-7 and NCI-H460. Photophysical studies were also performed. Two of the compounds displayed GI50 values below 10 µM for the three tested cell lines, and structure–activity relationship studies were established. Three compounds presented similar wavelengths of absorption and emission, characteristic of dyes with a push-pull character. The structures of two compounds were elucidated by X-ray crystallography. Two tetracyclic thioxanthenes emerged as hit compounds. One of the two compounds accumulated intracellularly as a bright fluorescent dye in the green channel, as analyzed by both fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry, making it a promising theranostic cancer drug candidate.

In this study, hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized by photo‐crosslinking of poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate/poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate monomer system using 2‐ (carboxymethoxy) thioxanthone and POSS‐(PEG2000)8. Additionally, AgNO3 was added to this formulation and in situ formation of silver nanoparticles onto hybrid nanocomposites were achieved in one‐step. UV–Vis spectroscopy technique was used as a very useful tool for surface plasmon resonance band detection of silver nanoparticles. In addition to thermogravimetric analyses which were performed in nitrogen atmosphere to determine the thermal stability of the nanocomposites, dynamic light scattering, and scanning electron microscopy techniques were also used for size and morphology of silver nanoparticles in a hybrid network. TGA analyses proved that even the addition of a very low amount of POSS‐(PEG2000)8 made noteworthy contribution to thermal stability especially in the presence of silver nanoparticles in the hybrid network. The swelling capacities of the prepared films were examined at 1, 3 and 24 h in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.4). It was found that film containing only POSS‐(PEG2000)8 had the highest swelling ratio in the shortest time.

Poly(eugenol-co-methylmethacrylate)/polypropylene blends were successfully prepared using methyl methacrylate (MMA), eugenol (Eg) and polypropylene (PP). First, poly(eugenol-co-methylmethacrylate) (poly(Eg-co-MMA)) was synthesized by photopolymerizaiton in one step at ambient temperature and without solvent. Benzophenone and triethylamine were used as photoinitiator and hydrogen donor, respectively. The second stage is the blending approach between polypropylene and poly(Eg-co-MMA) copolymer. The anti-bacterial test was carried out using the agar well diffusion. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus bacterial species were tested using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Disk-Diffusion method in antibacterial analysis. As a result of these studies, the blend polymers (PEgMMA 1:1 ) 30 -PP and (PEgMMA 1:1 ) 50 -PP showed activity against E. coli Gram-negative bacteria. Zone diameters are 7 ± 0.00 mm and 5.25 ± 0.25 mm for (PEgMMA1:1) 30 -PP and (PEgMMA1:1) 50 -PP, respectively. No activity has been observed against S. aureus bacteria. In antimicrobial tests, it was determined that the polymers did not show a high antibacterial property as expected. Structural characterization and thermal properties of the synthesized terpolymers were performed by FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), 1 H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), TG-DTG (thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry). SEM (scanning electron microscope) was used for surface analysis. The thermal stability of the synthesized blend polymers was higher than their homopolymers. Structural characterizations and surface analyzes support the successful performance of the synthesis.
