Organic molecules are gaining special attention over the last years in the corrosion area thanks to their general low achievable cytotoxicity, structural versatility, and environmentally friendly obtainment methods. Under those approaches, synthetic organic motifs have attracted the interest of researchers due to their variated methods of obtention through molecular manipulation via diverse chemical reactions, allowing the production of adequately planned structures or repurposing their original application in the case of drugs. This review summarizes general aspects that are desired in organic molecules as corrosion inhibitors, presenting selected works published in the 2022–2023 period and emphasizing the importance of finding novel and different organic corrosion inhibitors. Patents were not considered in this review. Scifinder, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were employed as databases. Mathematical and analytical methods involved in the search for corrosion inhibitors are out of this review’s scope.

The corrosion inhibition behavior of cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) on mild steel (MS) in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution was examined using the weight loss method and potentiodynamic polarization method. The experimented MS surface was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Corrosion rate and corrosion efficiency was calsulated via weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods where the corrosion rate in 0.5 M H2SO4 , 0.000192 M, and 0.0077 M of CPC solution was 12.09×10-3, 8.23×10-3, 6.63×10-5 (mm/Year), respectively and the inhibition efficiency of 94.42% and 98.54%. FESEM studies demonstrated the corrosion attack on MS surface. Also, the EDX showed the presence of nitrogen of CPC. Thus, CPC acts as an important corrosion inhibitor.

Valorized rice husk as green corrosion inhibitor for Al 6061 in 1M HCl

This study investigated the inhibition characteristics of rice husk (RH) on corrosion of Aluminum 6061 in 1M hydrochloric acid. Gravimetric analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)/ Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) as well as electrochemical studies revealed the potency of RH as a good inhibitor of the corrosion of Al 6061 in 1M HCl. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that –OH, C=C, and C=O with signals at (3317.19, 2932.9, 2848.2), (1631.8) and (1105.73, 1030.2, 447.15), respectively in RH were the viable active functional groups which adsorbed on the metal surface to effect reduction of corrosion rates. However, literature suggested the presence of amorphous silica in RH which served as a complimentary corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion current density of Al 6061 was reduced to 3.46 × 10−7 A/cm2 at 24 h as against 9.27 × 10−7 A/cm2 at the commencement of the potentiodynamic polarization measurements in inhibited 1M HCl. The control specimens exhibited an average corrosion rate of 3.86 × 10−6 A/cm2 in HCl solution at the start of this investigation as compared to the corrosion rate of 3.46 × 10−7 A/cm2 at 24 h of exposure in 5 mg RH- inhibited HCl. The obtained results gave a corrosion inhibition efficiency of about 90 to 92%.

Abstract: Thiophene derivatives: thiophene-2-carbaldehyde oxime (OXM) and 5-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-tetrazole (TET), were synthesized and characterized. Furthermore, their inhibitory property for AA2024-T3 in 1 M HCl solution was investigated via electrochemical and with theoretical study.
