Individuals, particularly women, are fixated on weight loss, driven by the goal of achieving a 'skinny' female physique that is desirable in western/ized cultures. There are online forums where individuals refer to themselves or their eating disorders as 'pro-ana' and 'pro-mia'; their posts on these sites both align with, and challenge, what medical and mental health professionals define as serious mental health problems. In February 2012, the social media website Tumblr announced a policy to censor these online communities and use public service announcements (PSAs) to address 'the problem'. Embracing contemporary ethnographic sensibilities, we present analyses that are attentive to nuanced meanings, and provide a critical feminist, sociological analysis of online comments from those who responded to the censorship and PSA policy. We argue that censorship extends the patriarchal control of women and that PSAs further the vested interests of corporate entities who profit from the marketing of services.

La présente étude se penche sur les tentatives récentes des chercheurs et des activistes pour comprendre les conséquences collatérales du système de justice pénale pour les familles des détenus et pour remettre en question la légitimité de tels dommages collatéraux dans la « guerre contre le crime ». Ceux qui cherchent à montrer que les familles des détenus sont des victimes du système font souvent face à des préjugés stigmatisants : les discours sociaux et politiques qui identifient ces familles comme étant marginalisées créent aussi des obstacles à la remise en cause des politiques qui ont des effets négatifs sur ces familles. Généralement, le discours des chercheurs et des défenseurs de cette cause qui tentent d’attirer l’attention sur les problèmes auxquels font face ces familles insiste sur l’innocence et montre du doigt le rôle des familles dans la réduction du crime. Chercheurs et défenseurs soutiennent ainsi que les services aux familles et aux enfants réduisent les risques de récidive et de crimes « intergénérationnels ». J’examinerai ici les dilemmes dans la conduite de telles analyses coût-bénéfice et dans la rhétorique néolibérale de la réduction du risque en vue de remettre en question les politiques qui affectent les familles. Je défendrai que la remise en cause de la stigmatisation et des changements dans les discours sur les conséquences collatérales doit passer par l’inclusion et les droits de la personne plutôt que par le discours de l’exclusion employé par les idéologies dominantes sur la réduction du crime.

This article offers an interpretive political analysis framework, exploring and asserting its value for understanding penal change. It is argued that this approach serves, in part, to emphasise the importance of the minutiae of political activity: the crucial impact that apparently minor decisions, unimportant participants, or particular ‘rules of the game’ can play in specific outcomes. It emphasises the importance of human agency and meaning: the relationship between politics and fate. It facilitates the connections of particular ‘micro’ analyses with ‘macro’ accounts of penal change. I argue that the approach set out here thereby enables us to place centre stage the beliefs and practices of policy participants, and the political dynamics of policymaking. By doing so, particular case studies serve as valuable ‘windows’ into the meanings in action that iteratively make sense of, respond to, and thereby (re‐)constitute the realities in which actors operate, specific penal outcomes, and broader penal change.
