Campaign priming is generally assumed to function through the activation of memory content. By focusing on specific issues or issue aspects, campaigns render corresponding cognitive concepts more accessible and hence influence which concepts are likely to be used in subsequent evaluation processes. Thus, priming is mainly understood as a cognitive process. In the present study we investigate the impact of campaigninduced emotions on opinion formation. We argue that emotions may activate cognitive content which may in turn influence political judgments. Our analyses support the hypothesis that political campaigns may influence public opinion not only through cognitive priming but also through affective priming.

Social media provides an area for athletes to engage with a mass audience and, in turn, has users create a narrative about the athlete in a collaborative effort. Using a platform, such as Twitter, offers numerous affordances for network interactions, which result in the shaping of online identities. Gaining insight into how resource mobilization impacts dialog and identity construction of an athlete is essential as sports have the unique ability to reach and influence a broad audience. This article explores how J.J. Watt used resource mobilization on Twitter to aid the Hurricane Harvey relief, and how his identity was socially constructed over a 3-year period. Based on a textual analysis of 2,965 tweets, the results show that Watt was able to use his celebrity status and active involvement to achieve the largest crowdsourced fundraiser in history. Further, Watt’s actions transformed his identity as a football player into a humanitarian.

Prozesse politischer Informationsverarbeitung wie "political awareness" (Zaller 1992) oder "need for orientation" (Matthes 2006) spielen in der Analyse des Primings eine wichtige Rolle als moderierende Größen auf der Individualebene. So unstrittig es ist, dass Priming konditional zu verstehen ist, so wenig eindeutig sind bislang die empirischen Befunde zum Einfluss der genannten Merkmale (z. B. Miller u. Krosnick 1996; Iyengar u. Kinder 2010[1987]). Und besonders in der deutschen Wahlforschung steht die Auseinandersetzung mit der konditionalen Natur politischer Informationsverarbeitung und dem Zusammenspiel von Individualmerkmalen und Wahlverhalten noch weitgehend aus (Schmitt-Beck 2012, S.14-15). Unser Beitrag ist wie folgt aufgebaut: Zuerst stellen wir den Forschungsstand zum Priming im Allgemeinen und zum Kandidaten-Priming im Speziellen sowie zu ausgewählten Moderatorvariablen der Individualebene dar; zudem wird auf die jüngere theoretische Diskussion von Priming eingegangen. Darauf aufbauend entwickeln wir ein Mehrebenenmodell des Kandidaten-Primings, das drei Variablengruppen enthält: In einem ersten Teil sind dies verschiedene Aspekte der Berichterstattung in Presse und Fernsehen zu den Spitzenkandidaten während des Wahlkampfes, die als kommunikativer (Makro-)Kontext den potentiellen Informationsinput des einzelnen Wählers beschreiben. Der zweite Teil des Gesamtmodells umfasst eine Variante des Michigan-Modells der Wahlentscheidung, darunter die Wahlabsicht, (kürzerfristige) Orientierungen gegenüber Kandidaten und Parteien sowie zuletzt die Parteiidentifikation. Dritter Teil des Modells sind zentrale Individualmerkmale, welche als moderierende Größen einbezogen werden. Datengrundlage unserer Mehrebenenanalysen ist die German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) zur Bundestagswahl 2009; die ‚Inputseite' des Kandidaten-Primings erfassen wir mittels detaillierter Inhaltsanalysen, die für deutsche Qualitätszeitungen und die Bild-Zeitung sowie für die wichtigsten TV-Nachrichtensendungen täglich während der engeren Wahlkampfzeit durchgeführt wurden; für die Analyse der Priming-Prozesse bei den Wählern ziehen wir die Rolling-Cross-Section-Studie der GLES heran, die es uns erlaubt, Priming-Effekte in feiner zeitlicher Differenzierung zu modellieren und gleichzeitig die Einflüsse der wichtigsten "contingent conditions" systematisch zu testen. 2. Priming: Theorie und Forschungsstand 2.1 Theoretische Modelle des Primings Priming wird in der Literatur häufig als Folgeffekt von individuellem Agenda Setting interpretiert und in theoretischer Hinsicht als dessen Weiterentwicklung verstanden (vgl. z. B. Iyengar et al. 1982; Scheufele 2000); beide Konzepte gelten daher als theoretisch verwandt (Peter 2002).
