Thin AMC Structure for Radar Cross-Section Reduction

Abstract: A thin artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) structure is designed and breadboarded for radar cross-section (RCS) Reduction applications. The design presented in this paper shows the advantage of geometrical simplicity while simultaneously reducing the overall thickness (for the current design 16). The design is very pragmatic and is based on a combination of AMC and perfect electric conductor (PEC) cells in a chessboard like configuration. An array of Sievenpiper's mushrooms constitutes the AMC part, while the … Show more

“…The principle is to reflect the EM signals away from the direction of incoming waves. A composite surface of AMC and PEC cells was proposed in [9]. The RCS reduction ability of the composite surface is based on the cancelation of reflection from the interfaces between them.…”

“…In recent years, the MS constituted by artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) [6,7] with low radar cross section (RCS) [8][9][10] has aroused great interest of researchers due to its tremendous potential in military practice. In particular, this kind of MS merely reflects the incident waves into the backward space rather than transforming electromagnetic energy into heat, such as metamaterial absorbers [11][12][13][14][15], which lowers the probability of MS being detected by infrared devices.…”
