“…Yiu et al 16 first described increased loses of thiamine secondary to loop diuretic therapy. Since then several other studies 10,13,17 have replicated these findings suggesting that loop diuretic therapy can lead to thiamine deficiency mainly secondary to hyperexcretion.…”

“…The issue of age as a factor contributing to the prevalence of thaimien deficiency was evaluated by Levy et al 17 who conducted a prospective trial of patients with a mean age of 47+10 years, NYHA class of 2.5+0.6 and mean LVEF of 22+9%. No evidence of thiamine deficiency was fund in their population of heart failure patients.…”

“…This syndrome mimics the signs and symptoms of HF; therefore, thiamin deficiency may actually exacerbate underlying HF. In fact, research has shown that when thiamin deficiency is corrected, LVEF improves 6 , 16 18 . Ejection fraction is one of the most widely used predictors of prognosis; patients with reduced LVEF typically have poor outcomes.…”

“…The issue of age as a factor contributing to the prevalence of thiamin deficiency was evaluated by Levy et al 16 who conducted a prospective trial of patients with a mean age of 47 ± 10 years, mean New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class of 2.5 ± 0.6 on a scale of I‐IV, and mean LVEF of 22 ± 9% (normal LVEF> 50% 8 ). The mean dosage of loop diuretics (mainly furosemide) was 184 mg/day.…”

“…Although thiamin adequacy is normally achieved in healthy subjects eating according to present guidelines (IOM, 1998), thiamin (compared with other nutrients), represents a nutrient with very high potential for deficiency . In particular, older adults are at especially high risk for the development of thiamin deficiency (Kwoh, Falconer-Smeith, Potter, & Ives, 1992;Levy, Soine, Huth, & Fishbein, 1992). The increased risk for thiamin deficiency among older persons may result from a disproportionately high prevalence of multiple chronic diseases, overnight hospitalizations, and the use of prescription medications from a large number of therapeutic categories (Barrocas, Jastram, & McCabe, 2003;DeBrew, Barba, & Test, 1998).…”
