Thialkalivibrio nitratireducens sp. nov., a nitrate-reducing member of an autotrophic denitrifying consortium from a soda lake

Abstract: Strain ALEN 2 T was isolated from a mixed culture capable of complete autotrophic denitrification with thiosulfate as electron donor at pH 10; the mixed culture was enriched from sediment from Lake Fazda (Wadi Natrun, Egypt), a hypersaline alkaline lake. The isolate had large, non-motile, coccoid or barrel-shaped cells with intracellular sulfur globules. The bacterium was obligately chemolithoautotrophic. It grew with reduced sulfur compounds aerobically and anaerobically with nitrate as electron acceptor, nit… Show more

“…Three-dimensional models of ONRs from halophilic (S1 File) and non-halophilic neutrophilic microorganisms (S2 File) were obtained using homology modeling based on the structure of TvNiR from haloalkaliphilic bacterium Tv . nitratireducens [22]. A comparative structural analysis of these two subsets of ONRs was performed based on subfamily-specific positions identified using Zebra [41] with an emphasis on the two enzymes as case studies: TvNiR and GsNiR (49% sequence identity) from a neutrophilic non-halophilic bacterium G .…”

“…In pure culture, Tv. nitratireducens could grow anaerobically by nitrate-reduction to nitrite (Sorokin et al, 2003c), while the second organism, Tv. denitrificans , lacking NAR, was capable of further reducing nitrite to N 2 via N 2 O (Sorokin et al, 2001b):…”
