Thermosensitive Polyacrylonitrile/Polyethylene Oxide/Polyacrylonitrile Membrane Separators for Prompt and Safer Thermal Lithium-Ion Battery Shutdown

Abstract: With the rapid development of high-power and high-energy density lithium-ion batteries, thermal safety has become a critical issue. Due to the fast microstructure change triggered by heat, thermosensitive polymers have aroused increasing attention as thermal shutdown material candidates to prevent the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a sandwich-structured polyacrylonitrile/polyethylene oxide/polyacrylonitrile (PAN/PEO/PAN) fibrous membrane with prompt thermal shutdown properties and high… Show more

“…A sandwich-like polyacrylonitrile/polyethylene oxide/polyacrylonitrile (PAN/PEO/PAN) fibrous separator was prepared by electrospinning. [62] The asprepared PAN/PEO/PAN separator exhibited promoted thermal shutdown property and high thermal stability. The inner layer of fusible PEO quickly melted and triggered thermal shutdown of the separator at 80 °C, whereas the outer PAN layers remained dimensionally stable at 200 °C.…”

“…If temperature rises, the fusible interlayer will melt and merge, forming a pore‐free layer and completely cutting off the lithium‐ion transfer channels. [ 158 ] Meanwhile, the robust outer layers serve as the mechanically dimensional support to avoid the contact of electrodes above the shutdown temperature. The Celgard PP/PE/PP trilayer membrane is a typical multilayer separator.…”

“…The real axis intercept of the curves at high frequency determines the resistance of the liquid electrolyte-soaked separator. 20 Compared with the PP separator (428.3 X), the resistances of the PAN separator and composite separator are 290.6 X and 167.0 X, because of the higher porosity and wettability of these nanofiber separators.…”
