Thermoplastic Green Machining for the Fabrication of a Piezoelectric Ceramic/Polymer Composite with 2‐2 Connectivity

Abstract: A piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite with 2‐2 connectivity was fabricated by thermoplastic green machining. A thermoplastic body, consisting of 60 vol% lead zirconate titanate ceramic particles (PZT) and 40 vol% thermoplastic binders, was computer numeric controlled‐machined, creating periodic channels in the green PZT body. Following thermal treatment (binder burnout and sintering), a 25 vol% array of 147 μm thin PZT slabs with an aspect ratio of seven separated by 442 μm channels was fabricated. The cha… Show more

“…Creation of precise, finely controlled material gradients within piezoceramic actuators requires the resolution of the Micro-Fabrication by Co-eXtrusion (MFCX) process; [34][35][36][37] which had to be adapted to the DEPP gradient constituent materials 17 and the demands of multi-dimensional FGP fabrication. The procedure for MFCX of multi-dimensional FGP consists of five steps: media preparation, gradient formation, shaping, firing, and post processing ( Figure 5).…”

“…Because many previous preparation techniques, such as injection molding [10], tape casting [11], laser cutting [12] and thermoplastic green machining [13], are not suitable for building novel and complex designs, and they are so tedious and cost-effective. This paper presents a lead-free piezoelectric composite with a new connection mode which has not been reported by any other labs, and the composite is fabricated by the roll forming-curling fabrication method.…”

“…The stator for the motor was made using the thermoplastic green machining process. A thermoplastic disk, consisting of 60 vol% PZT-based ceramic and 40% binders, was machined to form four windmill-type blades at the center and subsequently sintered after binder burnout [14]. This thermoplastic green machining process was very effective in reducing the size and also in enhancing the reproducibility of the ultrasonic motor.…”
