Thermophysical Property Measurements on Mold Materials: Thermal Expansion and Density

Abstract: In order to optimize casting processes, computational models of solidification have proven to be very valuable to foundrymen. It is experimentally proven that the casting defects are primarily related to mold properties. During the eutectic growth the temperature rises, which is commonly referred to as recalescence. This has a strong effect on the mold walls, and mold wall movement can occur. The huge pressures generated at this time can block voids if mold is rigid. In green sand molds the moisture content wi… Show more

“…The transition processes are accompanied by thermal expansion because at higher temperatures more open crystal structures are favoured. Expansion properties of different types of foundry sands and the effect of various additives and bonding agents on the thermal expansion of moulds and cores are common topics of foundry research [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Some reports also mention the partial investigation of specific size ranges of silica sands.…”

“…The heating rate was set to 10°C/min, the maximum temperature was 1100°C. In order obtain additional information compared to the literature [2,[6][7][8], the volume change was registered not only during heating up, but also during cooling down in the function of temperature. The measurements were first performed by Al 2 O 3 standard with the same layout to obtain a correction file containing the expansion of the system and the sample holder.…”

“…The relationship between grain size distribution and thermal properties such as thermal expansion is commonly studied in foundry research on unbonded and bonded sand samples [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. From the mould/metal interface, the mould layers heat up to a certain temperature range due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of the porous mould.…”
