High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a minimally invasive treatment modality for cancerous tumors. The monitoring of HIFU treatment is extremely important. Localized motion imaging (LMI) is a HIFU monitoring method basing on Harmonic motion method (HMI). It estimates the coagulation length by detecting the change of tissue stiffness. However, the previous LMI is not robust to noise, thus two techniques are employed to improve its noise robustness in this study. First, dynamic cross correlation window (DCCW) is used to obtain vibration amplitude with noise suppression. Second, vibrationfrequency band pass filter (VBPF) is employed to calculate the amount of vibration with expected frequency. The qualitative evaluation indicates that the two techniques are able to suppress the affection of noise on the vibration amplitude and vibration amount, respectively. Furthermore, the quantitative comparison demonstrates that the improved LMI is able to give higher accuracy of coagulation length estimation than the previous LMI, and it reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) from 2.52 to 1.84 mm. In this article, an improved noise robust LMI is proposed for monitoring HIFU treatment.

Hyperthermal techniques are spreading as an alternative to conventional surgery for cancer removal. A real-time temperature feedback can be used to adjust the treatment settings, in order to improve the clinical outcomes. In this paper, we experimentally assessed the feasibility for distributed temperature monitoring of a custom probe, which consists of a needle embedding six fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Since FBGs are also sensitive to strain, we focused on the analysis of the measurement error (artifact) caused by respiratory movements. We assessed the artifact both on ex vivo pig liver and lung (by mimicking the movement of these organs caused by respiration) and on in vivo trial on pig liver. Lastly, we proposed an algorithm to detect and minimize the artifact during ex vivo liver laser ablation. During both ex vivo and in vivo trials, the probe insertion within the organ was easy and safe. The artifact was significant (up to 3 °C), but the correction algorithm allows minimizing the error. The main advantages of the proposed probe are: 1) spatially resolved temperature monitoring (in six points of the tissue by inserting a single needle) and 2) the needle is magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible, hence can be used during MR-guided procedure. Even if the model is close to humans, further trials are required to investigate the feasibility of the probe for clinical applications.

ResumoMedir a temperatura interna e/ou o gradiente de temperatura em materiais é de fundamental interesse, tanto nas engenharias quanto nas ciências básicas, pois o comportamento da distribuição da temperatura está intimamente relacionado com as propriedades do material. O objetivo desse estudo foi desenvolver um sistema de termometria por ultrassom para monitoramento interno de gradiente de temperatura em materiais submetidos a uma fonte de calor. A comparação das medições de temperatura derivadas de ambos os métodos apresentou concordância maior que 96%, com diferenças inferiores a 0,70°C. Portanto, conclui-se que a metodologia apresentada mostrou-se relevante dentro do contexto laboratorial para estimativa de temperatura interna de materiais aquecidos. Palavras-chave:Termometria
