Thermogravimetric studies of the behavior of wheat straw with added coal during combustion

The non-isothermal thermogravimetric method (TGA) was applied to a bituminous coal (PT), two types of biomass, chestnut residues (CH) and olive stones (OS), and coalbiomass blends in order to investigate their thermal reactivity under steam. Fuel chars were obtained by pyrolysis in a fixed-bed reactor at a final temperature of 1373 K for 30 min. The gasification tests were carried out by thermogravimetric analysis from room temperature to 1373 K at heating rates of 5, 10 and 15 K min -1 . After blending, no significant interactions were detected between PT and CH during co-gasification, whereas deviations from the additive behaviour were observed in the PT-OS blend.However, for the two coal-biomass blends, the gasification behaviour resembled that of the individual coal, as this component constituted the larger proportion of the blend. The temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) technique was employed at three different heating rates to analyze noncatalytic gas-solid reactions. Three nth-order representative gas-solid models, the volumetric model (VM), the grain model (GM) and the random pore model (RPM) were applied in order to describe the reactive behaviour of the chars during steam gasification. From these models, the kinetic parameters were determined.The best model for describing the reactivity of the PT, PT-CH and PT-OS samples was the RPM model. VM was the model that best fitted the CH sample, whereas none of the models was suitable for the OS sample.

Karakteristik awal menunjukan cangkang buah karet (CBK) memiliki potensi yang baik digunakan sebagai bahan utama biopelet dengan kandungan abu yang rendah dan nilai kalori yang tinggi sedangkan bambu ater (Gigantochloa atter) berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan tambahan biopelet karena kandungan ligninnya yang tinggi sehingga dapat digunakan sebagai perekat alami. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mempelajari pemanfaatan CBK dan bambu ater sebagai biopelet dan menganalisis mutu biopelet yang dihasilkan. Komposisi campuran CBK dan bambu ater yang diteliti adalah 100%:0%, 95%:5%, 90%:10%, 85%:15%, dan 80%:20%. Proses pembuatan biopelet dilakukan pada tekanan 597,24 kg/cm 2 , suhu 150 o C selama 10 menit. Biopelet terbaik dihasilkan pada formulasi 85% CBK dan 15% bambu ater dengan kualitas kadar air 4,23%;; kadar abu 0,84%;; kadar zat terbang 79,44%;; kadar karbon terikat 15,48%;; nilai kalori 4472,41 kal/g;; diameter 8,30 mm;; panjang 32,66 mm;; bulk density 1063,87 kg/m 3 ;; mechanical durability 91,93%;; nitrogen 0,21%;; sulfur 0,05%;; dan klorin kurang dari 0,10 ppm. Kualitas biopelet tersebut memenuhi standar Indonesia (SNI 8021 : 2014) sedangkan berdasarkan standar Eropa (EN 14961-2), biopelet memiliki satu parameter yang belum memenuhi standar yaitu mechanical durability (min. 96,5%).Kata Kunci : Biopelet, energi alternatif, cangkang buah karet, bambu ater (Gigantochloa atter) ABSTRACT (SNI 8021: 2014), while based on European standards (EN 14961-2), biopelet had one parameter that didn't fulfill the requirement, the mechanical durability (min. 96.5%). The effects of different kinds (cotton stalk, rice husk, and sawdust) and proportions (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% based on weight) of biomass and operating conditions (temperature and excess air coefficient) were evaluated relative to the ash deposition characteristics during the cofiring of Huang Ling (HL) coal with biomass. The experiments were performed in a drop-tube furnace. The chemical compositions and mineral phase characteristics of the collected ash particles were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive Xray (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results showed that the most severe agglomeration, from co-firing coal with cotton stalk, was due to the higher content of alkali metals, especially K. The amount of K in the ash increased with an increasing proportion of cotton stalk, and ultimately, agglomeration was more serious. When the combustion temperature increased from 1050 °C to 1300 °C, the dystectic solid compounds were transformed into eutectic compounds. The increased excess air coefficient accelerated the sulfur reaction, but did not relieve the heavy sintering. Consequently, limiting the content of biomass in the fuel blends, maintaining a lower combustion temperature, and a suitable level of excess air were determined to be necessary for the co-firing of coal and biomass.
