Thermography for disease detection in livestock: A scoping review

Abstract: Infra-red thermography (IRT) offers potential opportunities as a tool for disease detection in livestock. Despite considerable research in this area, there are no common standards or protocols for managing IRT parameters in animal disease detection research. In this review, we investigate parameters that are essential to the progression of this tool and make recommendations for their use based on the literature found and the veterinary thermography guidelines from the American Academy of Thermology. We analyze… Show more

“…Thermal imaging can be used in livestock to detect indications of illness or injury. Changes in body temperature, for example, can suggest the existence of a fever, which is a typical sign of many disorders [ 11 ]. Thermal imaging can be used to detect estrus, which indicate when a female animal is in heat [ 12 ].…”

“…In contrast, IRT is a noninvasive method that records thermal patterns released by the convolutional process in convolutional neural network (CNN) can reduce surface of the body. 7 By detecting variations in skin temperature, it can provide valuable insights into blood circulation and vascular irregularities associated with CVI. This method offers advantages such as being contactless, quick, and painless for patients.…”

“…However, ultrasound has certain limitations, such as operator dependency and a requirement for direct contact with the skin. In contrast, IRT is a non‐invasive method that records thermal patterns released by the convolutional process in convolutional neural network (CNN) can reduce surface of the body 7 . By detecting variations in skin temperature, it can provide valuable insights into blood circulation and vascular irregularities associated with CVI.…”
