Thermodynamics of an OWC containing real gas

Abstract: Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices are usually modelled as simple systems containing ideal, dry air. However, high humidity levels are likely to occur in a prototype device open to the sea, particularly in warm climates such as prevail in the lower latitudes. In this paper, a real gas model is implemented to take into account humidity variations inside an OWC chamber. Using a modified adiabatic index, theoretical expressions are derived for the thermodynamic state variables including enthalpy, entropy and … Show more

“…But if further calculations concerning the efficiency of the turbine are required, the orifice may be replaced by an Actuator Disk Model in the case of a numerical simulation [62,63]. In order to study the effect of the turbine-chamber coupling in the model, three different orifice sizes (turbine damping) were considered [64].…”

“…The Thermodynamics formalism can be applied to relate the initial state of the system in the contraction region with its final state downwind the OWC chamber and turbine. The following rationale and its conclusions have been applied and validated by the authors in previous research, [50].…”

“…In order to appropriately implement the basic principles concerning the thermodynamic process of air compression and expansion inside the OWC chamber and following the research line traced by the authors in [49,50], a gas system enclosed in a moving and deformable control volume is considered, see figure 1. The situation described in figure 1 might as well represent the process of an air flow being compressed inside an OWC chamber, where the turbine would be mounted at the right end.…”

“…Furthermore, the effect of air compressibility on the estimation accuracy of the OWC's energy conversion has been studied. The change in an air density due to the air compression and decompression is affected by the pressure, temperature and humidity inside the chamber [25][26][27][28], which leads to a reduction in pneumatic power and a phase difference of the power in the chamber and turbine [25][26][27]29]. Moreover, considering the air compressibility, the OWC's energy conversion performance may vary depending on the scale effect of the model [29,30].…”
