Thermodynamic experiments on gases with a computer on-line

Abstract: Experiments on the adiabatic expansion of air are presented. Historical problems in the measurement of specific heats of gases are overcome using a fast acquisition on-line technique for gas thermometry. Pressure oscillations are seen to arise from non-steady-state heat inputs, and temperature corrections are evaluated. Education applications to the teaching of thermodynamics are discussed.
