The performance of a solar air heater (SAH) is computationally investigated in this study using COMSOL multiphysics software. The present study aims to enhance the performance of smooth SAH with the help of artificial roughness. To achieve the goal, trapezoidal ribs above (Model 1) and below (Model 2) the absorber were fixed. The thermo‐hydraulic characteristics of smooth SAH were compared with the thermo‐hydraulic performances of Model 1 and Model 2. The computations were made by varying the heat flux between 600 and 1000 W/m2, Reynolds number from 4000 to 7000, relative rib height (h/H) from 0.2 to 0.7, and a constant pitch of 15 mm. The maximum enhancement in Nusselt number (Nu) compared to smooth duct was 5.54 times for Model 1 and 5.42 times for Model 2 at a h/H = 0.7 at Re = 7000. The maximum increase in friction factor was 36.97 times more than the smooth duct. The thermal performance factor (TPF) at 1000 W/m2 ranged from 1.29 to 1.72 for Model 1 and 1.27 to 1.68 for Model 2. It is found that trapezoidal ribs of Model 1 with h/H of 0.6 has delivered a maximum TPF of 1.72 at Re = 7000. The optimized relative rib height was found to be 0.6. The maximum exergy efficiency of 10.40% was obtained for Model 1 with h/H of 0.6 and at 1000 W/m2.

In the present study, a thermo-hydraulic performance (THP) of solar air heater (SAH) has been assessed by placing sine wave-shaped baffles on the heat-absorbing surface. The experiments have been performed by varying Reynolds number ([Formula: see text]) ranging from 3000-18,000, relative pitch ([Formula: see text]) ranging from 8 to 14, relative height ([Formula: see text]) ranging from 0.4 to 0.55, relative baffle length [Formula: see text] ranging from 0.054 to 0.081 and angle of attack(α) ranging from 10° to 45° while the duct aspect ratio has been kept fixed at 12. The best set of geometric parameters has been decided based on Nusselt number [Formula: see text] and friction factor [Formula: see text] characteristics of the roughened SAH and compared with the smooth surface SAH, under analogous experimentation conditions. The cost analysis has also been performed and results revels that roughened SAH is more cost-effective than smooth SAH. The correlation for Nusselt number [Formula: see text], friction factor [Formula: see text], and thermo-hydraulic performance parameters (η) have been developed using regression analysis and found an average deviation of ±9.15%, ±7%, and ±9.2% respectively, from experimental results.

Conventional flat plate solar air collectors have advantages such as low cost and simple design. However, their thermal efficiency is lower than that of other designs. The thermal efficiency of these collectors can be increased by detailed examination of parameters such as the shape, size, arrangement and material of the air duct. In this study, it is aimed to improve the thermal efficiency of solar air collectors. The effect of louver baffles, which were not previously used in solar air collectors, on thermal efficiency was investigated numerically via computational fluid dynamics. Three different solar air collectors with flat plates, segmented baffles, and louver baffles were compared in terms of thermal efficiency. In addition, pressure drops in solar air collectors were investigated. The mass flow rate of the air in all collectors is assumed to be 0.04 kg/s. Analyzes were carried out between 09:00 and 16:00. The thermal efficiency values obtained during the day for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles are 27.66%–56.35%, 29.57%–58.82% and 30.09%–59.47%, respectively. The daily thermal efficiency values obtained for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles are 46.98%, 49.18% and 49.87%, respectively. The pressure drop for solar air collectors with flat plate, segmented baffles and louver baffles were found to be 4.62, 18.82 and 5.96 Pa, respectively. Based on the data obtained from this study, louver baffles are recommended for use in solar heating applications due to their high thermal efficiency and low pressure drop.
