Thermo- and pH-sensitive nanoparticles of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-decenoic acid-1-vinylimidazole) for ultrasound switchable fluorescence imaging

Abstract: We herein report the synthesis of poly (9-decenoic acid-1-vinylimidazole- N-isopropylacrylamide) nanoparticles containing indocyanine green (ICG) in one pot and in water phase throughout the reaction. We have shown that copolymers of 9-decenoic acid and 1-vinylimidazole, or 9-decenoic acid alone, have an enhanced sensitivity to pH values between 7.4 and 6.8 and are superior to the widely used acrylic acid. We have also shown that incorporation of acidic comonomers leads to the favorable outcome of a higher flu… Show more

“…To address this pressing clinical challenge, fluorescence image-guided surgery has emerged as a promising strategy for using fluorescence to highlight tumor tissue. As a kind of noninvasive molecular imaging technology, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging is characterized by high sensitivity in deep tissue, high spatial resolution and safety, and easy to use. In recent years, it has received more and more attention in preoperative diagnosis and intraoperative guidance. However, existing fluorescence imaging methods still have some limitations.…”

“…13 Modification of PNIPAM-based nanoparticles was investigated and pH sensitive PNIPAM nanoparticles were obtained such that the USF fluorescence intensity increases in a low pH environment. 14 Nevertheless, the biocompatibility of PNIPAM-based agents is a potential concern. 15,16 To improve the biocompatibility, indocyanine green (ICG)-encapsulated liposomes, which comprise biocompatible lipids, were developed.…”
