Thermo‐Adaptive Block Copolymer Structural Color Electronics

Abstract: Flexible electronics that enable the visualization of thermal energy have significant potential for various applications, such as thermal diagnosis, sensing and imaging, and displays. Thermo‐adaptive flexible electronic devices based on thin 1D block copolymer (BCP) photonic crystal (PC) films with self‐assembled periodic nanostructures are presented. By employing a thermo‐responsive polymer/non‐volatile hygroscopic ionic liquid (IL) blend on a BCP film, full visible structural colors (SCs) are developed becau… Show more

“…Yu et al constructed a thermoadaptive structural colored system as flexible patches for thermo-sensing scenarios. [114] A poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and Li-TFSI blend solution was spun-coated onto a PS-b-QP2VP photonic film. The QP2VP domain was partially swollen with water and Li-TFSI, endowing the photonic device with a thermochromic optical response.…”

“…In most prior work, a swelling agent preferentially absorbed by one of the two BCP domains was used to ensure the mechanical stability of a BCP PC upon swelling ( 5 8 ). A variety of domain swelling agents have been demonstrated, including solvents, ionic liquids, sol-gel precursors, and photocrosslinkable hydrogels, giving rise to visible range SCs of BCP PCs, which are readily changed upon subsequent stimulation ( 6 8 , 15 , 23 ).…”

“…Block copolymers (BCPs) have also been widely used for creating photonic crystals via microphase separation. Early studies mainly focused on the self-assembly of linear BCPs, and ultra-high molecular weight samples are required to create nanostructures large enough to reflect visible light. Super slow self-assembly kinetics are typically observed due to severe polymer chain entanglements.…”
