Thermionic Emission of Electrons from Gold Nanoparticles by Nanosecond Pulse-Laser Excitation of Interband

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles exhibit optical absorption bands assignable to a broad interband in the UV region and a narrow intraband (surface plasmon band) in the 520 nm wavelength region. The gold nanoparticles were multiply ionized in an aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate when excited by a tightly focused nanosecond pulsed laser at 532 nm resonant to the intraband or at 355 nm resonant to the interband. Although the absorbance at 355 nm is almost comparable with the absorbance at 532 nm, gold nanoparticles wi… Show more

“…These simulated peaks were consistent with experimental results (Fig. 3a, b) and attributed to the visible absorption of gold and the overlap of UV absorption of graphene and inter-band transition Au d-electrons [36,41]. For small GNP and GNP-QD targets (R GNP =10 nm), the scattering component was significantly suppressed as compared to the absorption component (Fig.…”

“…16,19 The contributions of intraband and interband transitions to a typical UV-Vis spectrum of ordinary Au NPs without special nanostructures are schematically shown in Figure 3(b). 11,[35][36][37] It is noteworthy that the AQE profile is in a perfect agreement with photoabsorption through interband transition of Au NPs, which is similar to our previous report. 10 This result can be possibly explained from two aspects.…”

“…The finding suggests that the aggregation and reshaping of the AuNPs are considered to be induced by photoexcitation followed by the melting of the NPs based on the laser-liquid interaction. 13 A linear relationship between the contributions of the spheroidal particles and the rotational speed was obtained as shown in the inset of Fig. 2.…”
