ThermalOpt: A methodology for automated BIM-based multidisciplinary thermal simulation for use in optimization environments

Abstract: This paper describes ThermalOpt-a methodology for automated BIM-based multidisciplinary thermal simulation intended for use in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) environments. ThermalOpt mitigates several technical barriers to BIM-based multidisciplinary thermal simulation found in practice today while integrating and automating commercially available technologies into a workflow from a parametric BIM model (Digital Project) to an energy simulation engine (EnergyPlus) and a daylighting simulation engi… Show more

“…Several different names have been given to this approach: CDO-computational design optimization [10], performance-based design [11,12], design by simulation [13], MDO-multidisciplinary design optimization [14][15][16][17], GDS-generative design system, or GOD-goal-oriented design [14,16]; however, the term performance-driven design optimization [18] accurately represents its philosophy. When used under a computational/parametric 3D modeling environment the term "generative" or "computational" could add clarity to its description among architects who are familiar with these terms.…”

“…The technical barriers impeding the objective of bringing dynamic properties to models are being removed and that objective is being pursued through parametric scripting (Nembrini et al, 2014), integration with BIM software (Gerber et al, 2013;Welle et al, 2011) and the recourse to shape grammars (Granadeiro et al, 2013).…”

“…Hence, new BIM objects, for example smart windows (e.g. able to self-actuate to control their light transmission properties), can be generated and so optimised, controlling the real building component via its sensor-actuator connection [8,16]. …”
