Thermally Induced Flexure, Buckling, and Vibration of Plates

Abstract: A survey is made of investigations concerned with the response of flat plates to thermal loadings. The discussion focuses on three major topics: (i) thermally induced bending, (ii) buckling, postbuckling, and large deformation behaviors, and (iii) vibrational characteristics associated with elevated temperatures and rapid heating. Consideration is given both to thin and to moderately thick plates, plates having various planforms and support conditions, and isotropic homogeneous, as well as anisotropic or heter… Show more

“…Extensive investigations on the thermal bending and post-buckling of isotropic and composite plates and shells were carried out by Tauchert and Huang (1987); Tauchert (1991); Meyers and Hyer (1991) and Leissa (1992), etc. Wu and his colleagues also have established a number of 3D solutions of thermoelastic, dynamic and buckling problems of laminated composite doubly curved and conical shells (Wu et al, 1996a(Wu et al, , 1996bChiu, 2001, 2002) …”

“…Thermal deformation and stress in laminates have been analyzed by using equivalent single-layer models (ESLMs) (Reddy and Hsu 1980, Kheider and Reddy 1991, Kant and Khare 1994, Rohwer et al 2001, Cho and Oh 2003, Wu and Chen 2006, in which the unknown variables are independent of the number of layers. More ESLMs for thermomechanical problems of laminated plates can be found in the review articles by (Tauchert 1991), (Noor and Burton 1992) and (Argyris and Tenek 1997). In addition, (Cho et al 1989) and (Murakami 1993) used layerwise models to predict thermal response of multilayered plates.…”

“…The previous studies on vibration and buckling of composite panels subjected to hygrothermal loads are available in literature and reviewed by Tauchert [1] through 1991. The effects of hygrothermal conditions on the free vibration of laminated panels was considered earlier by Whitney and Ashton [2] using the Ritz method based on the classical laminated plate theory.…”
