Thermally activated exchange narrowing of the Gd3+ESR fine structure in a single crystal of Ce1xGdet al.

Abstract: We report electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the Gd 3+ doped semiconducting filled skutterudite compound Ce1−xGdxFe4P12 (x ≈ 0.001). As the temperature, T , varies from T ≃ 150 K to T ≃ 165 K the Gd 3+ ESR fine and hyperfine structures coalesce into a broad inhomogeneous single resonance. At T ≃ 200 K the line narrows and as T increases further the resonance becomes homogeneous with a thermal broadening of 1.1(2) Oe/K. These results suggest that the origin of these features may be associated to a su… Show more

“…Single crystals were grown by the tin-flux method. [43,44] Checking of crystalline perfection for dynamical diffraction and lattice parameter determination at room temperature, 297 K, were carried out with characteristic radiation in a Huber four-circle diffractometer sourced by a fine focus copper rotating anode configured with a double collimating multilayer optics followed by a double bounce Ge 220 channel-cut monochromator.…”

“…[41,42] To exploit this resonant phase shift, multi-wavelength data collection and analysis procedures were developed and applied to a single crystal of CeFe 4 P 12 . [43,44] Preliminary results point towards a scenario where rattling of the filler atoms Ce alone is not enough to explain the CeFe 4 P 12 vibrational dynamics, suggesting that a complex interaction between the filler-cage subsystems is a common thread to many skutterudites. “…This notation explicitly indicates the CF ¼ZFS confusion, whereas no reference was provided [152] for the Q q k operators. The incorrect terminology naming explicitly the true ZFS and/ or the ZFS parameters as the 'CF interaction (effects)' and/or the CF parameters, respectively, may be found also in the recent EPR studies of the Gd 3 þ ions by Garcia et al [153] and the Fe 3 þ ions by Güler et al [154].…”
