Thermal, X-ray Diffraction and Oedometric Analyses of Silt-Waste/NaOH-Activated Metakaolin Geopolymer Composite

Abstract: The present research investigates the possibility to create a silt-waste reinforced composite through a NaOH-activated, metakaolin-based geopolymerization process. In this regard, we used thermal exo–endo analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and oedometric mechanical tests to characterize the produced composites. In our experimental conditions, the tested material mixtures presented exothermic peaks with maximum temperatures of about 100 °C during the studied geopolymerization process. In general, the XRD analys… Show more

“…Metakaolin is the commercial product Metamax (Basf SE Ludwigshafen, Germany), a very reactive metakaolin as recently shown by [10], which was obtained through calcination of pure kaolinite at 850°C for 5 hours. It shows an intense white colour and a very fine granulometry.…”

“…Design of Experiments (DOE), or statistical experimental design, is a profound approach and methodology for model building and optimizing multivariable systems [1,2]. For instance, tackling and optimizing problems related to the effect of process factors on production properties could be managed through fractional factorial or central composite design methods.…”

“…Recycling such material is of paramount importance since it could reduce the adverse environmental impacts due to landfills. These kinds of materials have been used in the production of several products, such as geopolymers, cement mortars, artificial aggregates, and pavements [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…Different precursors have been used in various research studies, among them fly ashes [33], metakaolin [34,35] and blast furnace slags [36]. The type of precursor has a direct impact on many mechanical and chemical properties of the geopolymer.…”

“…Based on XRD analysis for both the metakaolins, MK2 was found to be more reactive if compared to MK1, denoting the presence of amorphous reactive phases [34] and, thus, suitable to be used. On the other hand, MK1, even though it has an amorphous phase, has a crystal formation in it, probably due to some impurity originated in the production process, more likely to be a less calcinated kaolin (quartz-like structure).…”
