Thermal, X-Ray and Birefringence Measurements in Hexatic Liquid Crystal Phases

Abstract: A number of experimental data on hexatic liquid crystal phases, namely the smectic I and F phases of various members of the TBnA family, are presented. They allow a better understanding of the respective structures and information of the smectic I and F phases.

“…All these experiments showed the first-order character of the phase transition between the SmC mesophase and isotropic liquid. Our results correspond to the results presented in [48][49][50][51] and show that the phase transition between the SmC mesophase and isotropic liquid in the SA1 and SA2 compounds is clearly a first-order transition.…”

“…The phase transitions between SmC and the isotropic liquid are characterized by the equality of the two free energies and, accordingly, by the availability of two T Ã and T ÃÃ temperature limits and the existence of thermic hysteresis. Thus, our results are in good agreement with theoretical research [35] and experimental studies [36,37] associated with SmC-I phase transitions.…”

“…In this paper our interest is the study of CI transition. There are relatively few experimental papers [1][2][3][4] on the CI transition. The pretransitional behavior of terephthalylidene-bis-p-ntetradecylaniline (TB14A) and terephthalylidene-bis-p-hexadecylaniline (TB16A) exhibits a direct CI transition 4 and the pretransitional effects are weaker at the CI transition than the AI and NI transitions.…”
