Thermal Stabilization of NiTiCuV Shape Memory Alloys: Observations During Elastocaloric Training

Abstract: The paper presents novel findings observed during the training process of superelastic, elastocalorically optimized Ni-Ti-based shape memory alloys (SMA). NiTiCuV alloys exhibit large latent heats and a small mechanical hysteresis, which may potentially lead to the development of efficient solid-state-based cooling processes. The paper starts with a brief introduction to the underlying principles of elastocaloric cooling, illustrating the effect by means of a typical thermodynamic cycle. It proceeds with the d… Show more

“…Within the framework of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) priority program, various new results on fundamental material aspects, especially on phase transformation behavior, were obtained . These results supported the development of a new pseudoelastic SMA that exhibits superior properties for ferroic cooling . All key findings are presented here in brief.…”

“…This low hysteresis width predominately accounts for the high COP value of the NiTiCuV SMA. A detailed analysis of the cooling performance of the Ni 45 Ti 47.25 Cu 5 V 2.75 SMA material is available in the literature …”

“…This temperature change has a similar influence on the material stabilization, as do mechanical training cycles at various temperatures [12][13][14][15] . In addition to the well-known mechanical 13 and caloric 16 stabilization, a thermal material stabilization can be observed with the designed setup by applying thermography 17 .…”

“…In addition, some new quaternary NiTi-based SMAs, which possess special properties, have been put forward as well. These new quaternary NiTi-based SMAs include NiTiHfPd SMA with high strength [23,24], TiNiCuPd SMA with near-zero hysteresis [25], and NiTiCuV SMA with high thermal stabilization [26]. However, only a few studies have reported the investigations of quaternary NiTi-based SMAs.…”
