Thermal Stability Enhanced Tetraethylenepentamine/Silica Adsorbents for High Performance CO2 Capture

Abstract: Tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), consisting mainly of primary and secondary amines, exhibits a high CO 2 sorption capacity; however, its poor thermal stability hampers practical utilization in the temperature swing adsorption process for CO 2 capture. Here, a facile functionalization of TEPA with 1,2-epoxybutane (EB) substantially enhanced its thermal stability as well as the CO 2 adsorption kinetics. Our careful analysis on the liquid-state 13 C NMR disclosed the amine state distribution of EB-functionalized TE… Show more

“…Different amine–epoxy crosslinking schemes were utilized to covalently stabilize the immobilized sorbent amines. These leach‐resistant catalysts can be used for CO 2 capture and for heterogeneous catalysis employed in carbon–carbon addition reactions . Both TMPED/SiO 2 and APTES/SiO 2 aminosilane‐based catalysts were observed to be more leach‐resistant/stable than their polyamine‐based counterparts because of a stable surface layer of covalently grafted aminosilane–silica species …”

“…Chemical structures of all compounds in TEPA and the corresponding liquid-phase 13 C NMR spectrum. Quantitative NMR analysis of amine state distribution was carried out using the equation of 1°:2°:3° = ( A a + A b + A c ):( A d + A e + A f + A g + A h )/2:( A i + A j + A k + A l )/3, where A i is the integrated peak area for i species (a); N 1s peak processing of XPS of PG–TEPA (b) and PG–TEPA–PO (c); amine state distributions of TEPA, PG–TEPA, and PG–TEPA–PO (d).…”
