Thermal Research with Application to Buildings: Research Programmes of the Swedish National Testing Institute

Abstract

BUILDING PHYSICS REPRESENTS an important area of knowledge for the bmldmg sector. The section of bmlding physics concerned with the thermal performance of materials and parts of buildings is of importance for thermal transport, energy management and temperature conditions, which in turn mfluence the mternal environment and the durability of the structure.The amount of effort devoted to thermal research has varied over the years, in step with the shift of emphasis from energy management to durability, moisture damage, sick buildings, etc. At the same time, the importance of accurate, adequate knowledge has become better appreciated. Discussions have therefore been held within the industry, with research workers and with the Swedish Council for Bmlding Research (BFR), with the aim of ensuring continuity of thermal research and a proper appreciation of its importance as represented by a coordinated programme of research.At present, a small working party is busy establishing and developmg the programme on behalf of BFR, and in engagmg the necessary research workers and interested parties. The objective of the programme is to establish an adequate level of national expertise and knowledge within the sector, with high priority to international cooperation. z OBJECTIVESThe research programme is intended to create the necessary conditions for proper thermal performance of buildings, which in turn is a prereqmsite for good indoor chmate, structural durability and integrity and proper energy JOURNAL
