Thermal Properties of Paraffin/Nano-AlN Phase Change Energy Storage Materials

Abstract: The phase change energy storage materials based on paraffin/nano-aluminum nitride were prepared in this study. The thermal stability of the composite materials was determined by differential scanning calorimeter, simultaneous thermogravimetry analysis-differential thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The results of differential scanning calorimeter and X-ray diffraction showed that the thermal performance and structure of the composite materials are stable. The change of latent heat is accredite… Show more

“…This is because typical PCM, such as paraffin, sugar alcohol, and molten salt, have low thermal conductivities in the 0.1-1 W m À1 K À1 range, which has led to low charging and discharging rates of the LHS system. Several studies have focused on developing phase change composites (PCC) with high effective thermal conductivities by mixing high thermal conductivity fillers, such as carbon materials [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], metals [15], ceramics [16], and nanostructured materials [17], with PCM. Another route to increase the thermal conductivity is to impregnate PCM into high thermal conductivity porous materials [18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Additionally, paraffins exhibit a lower flash point in the range of 108 • C to 170 • C [56] which makes their use in building vulnerable to fire. Therefore, a fire resistant shell material is crucially important to enable them to withstand the fire [57].…”

“…Mettawee et al (2007) used aluminium powder with wax to improve the thermal conductivity and it was observed that the addition of 0.5 mass fraction of aluminium reduced charging time by 60%; also it was found that there was an increase in heat gain by the mixture [196]. Paraffin which contains 3% aluminium nitrate PCM improves thermal stability and prevents thermal decomposition [197]. Carbon nanotubes can be also used for desalination application [198] such as reverse osmosis and membrane separation; further carbon nanotubes can be used to desalinate water and for other liquid based separations [199,200], membrane distillation [201].…”
