Thermal Optimization Strategy Based on Second-Order Harmonic Circulating Current Injection for MMCs

Abstract: Thermal management is one of the most significant challenges for reliability improvement of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The thermal stress difference caused by the uneven loss distribution between top and bottom IGBTs/diodes will lead to lifetime difference of the IGBTs/diodes which will decrease the reliability of the MMC. In this paper, a thermal optimization strategy for MMCs is proposed, where the maximum thermal stress in the IGBT/diode of each SM can be effectively reduced through injecting opt… Show more

“…In the actual operation of MMC, all SMs need to constantly switch except for the "off" state, meaning that the capacitors in the SMs are in a constant process of charging and discharging [4][5][6][7]. DC support capacitors are subjected to high temperatures in addition to complex electrical stresses during operation [8,9]. A large number of heat-generating devices, such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and DC support capacitors, lead to high temperatures in the converter valve hall.…”

“…The failure of MMC requires considerable time and cost to restoration [7][8]. Therefore, according to the lifetime and robustness, the reliability of the MMC is still a crucial issue [9][10].…”

“…In the steady state, the variance of the output current is ideally sinusoidal, and the variance of the circulating current is negligible. The references of the upper and lower voltage are represented in equation ( 9) and (10).…”
