“…This is in broad agreement with the results of Fukuda et al (1987) and Kobayashi and Kandon (1982), who report an RBE of 6 for 10 B-capture products in melanoma cells, but rather higher than the value of 3.7 reported by Davies et al (1970). However, the effectiveness of the capture products depends to a large degree on the distribution of 10 B in the cell (Nakanishi et al, 1980). Studies with melanoma employ specific melanin precursors which concentrate in the cell thus increasing the effective 10 B concentration.…”

“…The first boron-containing promazines were described by Nakagawa and Aono 162 in which the boron moieties were attached to the aliphatic nitrogen of CPZ. The results with these compounds were not very promising owing in part to their low aqueous solubility and the probability that this aliphatic nitrogen, in protonated form, was involved in the binding to melanin and, thereby, to melanoma cells, via a charge-transfer complex with an indole nucleus . The boron-containing quaternary ammonium compound may interfere with the compound's intracellular transit and in its binding to melanin.…”

“…Research in the field of radiation biology and radiation oncology is particularly important. In 1987, on the basis of the results of the experimental, technical, and preclinical studies on BNCT of melanoma [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], Mishima et al applied BNCT with BPA for the first time in a patient with metastatic melanoma and obtained good local control of the tumor. Since then, until 2002, a total of 22 patients with melanoma were treated with BNCT [ 3 , 4 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], which provided good tumor control and longer patient survival.…”
