THERMAL MODIFICATION OF Eucalyptus grandis WOOD: VARIATION OF COLORIMETRIC PARAMETERS

Abstract: The color modifications in Eucalyptus grandis thermally modified wood were investigated. One hundred eighty specimens (10 x 10 x 200 mm) were prepared and thermally modified in an electric kiln for 4 and 8 h at 180-240ºC. The color parameters (L*, a*, b*, C*, h* and ΔE) were determined by the CIE-L*a*b* method on radial and tangential sections of untreated and treated wood. The results indicated the darkening of specimens in the radial and tangential sections. Both sections showed variation of L* between 73 an… Show more

“…In this sense, many treatments have been proposed in order to minimize weathering effects on wood surface, with some promising results already reported. These treatments include: thermal treatments, 6,7 acetylation, 8 surface coatings, 2 manufacture of wood composites with wood flour, 9 wood fiber, 10 and in situ polymerization, 11 among other chemical modifications. 10,12,13 In comparison with other treatments, thermal treatment is an eco-friendly treatment capable of improving many wood features without using chemicals.…”

“…hemicellulose) also result in coloured substances, though the impact of hemicellulose degradation on colour changes is relatively small. 23,24 NIR model development NIR spectra were collected from the cross sections of 77 wood blocks (20 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm). A total of 77 NIR spectra were combined with the colour parameters data (L*, a* and b*) measured by the NH310 colorimeter, in order to construct the regression calibration.…”
