Thermal Model Approach to Multisector Three-Phase Electrical Machines

Abstract: Multisector machines reveal a high fault-tolerant capability, since failure events can be isolated by de-energizing the faulty sector while the healthy ones contribute in delivering the required power. This paper is focused on the thermal analysis of multisector three-phase machines in healthy and faulty operations. Firstly, a 3D lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) of a single sector is developed and fine-tuned against experimental data, through a genetic algorithm for identifying the uncertain parameters.… Show more

“…By using the machine thermal model, it is possible to set higher phase current than rated[43]-[45], but this requires knowledge of such model and it implies extra converter current overrating and additional complexity.2 Further explanation about the relation between |i αβ 1 | and torque can be found, e.g., in Sections 2.2 and 2.3 of[8].VOLUME 10, 2021 …”

“…The cooling system of the motor is taken into account and the distance between cooling ducts and the distance between the ducts and the stator stack have found as most significant parameters. The paper of Zhang et al [17] studied on thermal analysis of fault-tolerant multisector machine. It is found that the machine can produce torque for 10 minutes before the winding temperature exceeds the limitation.…”

“…Thermal management plays a critical part in the design and operation of electrical machines (EMs) [1][2][3]. An excellent cooling system [4][5][6] and / or the adoption of suitable materials with low thermal conductivity [7], can guarantee a) appropriate reliability levels (i.e., low failure probability) [8] and b) possibility to achieve high torque / power densities [9,10].…”
