The material is not soluble in water but slightly soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and very soluble in the inhomogeneous environment of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles, which deviates significantly from the properties of sodium decavanadate. By considering the fact that decavanadate is reported to have insulin-enhancing activity in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (Pereira et al., J. Inorg. Biochem. 2009, 103, 1687-1692, how this oxometalate interacts with interfaces was investigated using NMR and IR spectroscopy.

Five new polyoxovanadate-based cluster compounds, (Et 4 N) 4 [HV 15 O 39 (acac)Cl] • 3CH 3 CN (1), (Et 4 N) 5 [V 16 O 40 X] (X ) Br 2a; X ) Cl 2b), (Me 2 NH 2 ) 8 [H 2 V 16 O 42 (ClO 4 )] • 4H 2 O (3), and (Me 2 NH 2 ) 2 (Et 4 N) 2 [H 2 V 10 O 28 ] (4), having different types of vanadium oxide shells are isolated in organic media. Compounds 1-3 are hollow structures with different encapsulated anions in their centers. The surfaces of four compounds are constituted by vanadium and oxygen atoms, showing large 10-membered -O-V-O-V-rings and/or eight-membered -O-V-O-V-rings, which distinguish vanadium-oxide clusters from the common hollow clusters built up with closed surfaces.
