Thermal Ecology of Moustached and Ghost-Faced Bats (Mormoopidae) in Venezuela

Abstract: The moustached bats, Pteronotus davyi, P. personatus, and P. parnellii, and bat, Mormoops megalophylla (Mormoopidae), are homeotherms with normal basal rates of metabolism for mammals of their body mass. They are temperatures below 15TC for long, and none of the four species studied appe torpor. Thermal conductance of each species is high compared to expected v mals, but within the upper range of available values for bats. Except in P. p females have lower basal rates of metabolism than conspecific males. We h… Show more

“…(Audet and Thomas, 1996;Turbill et al, 2003). In our study we were expecting to find high DEE values because as a tropical species, living near the equator at relatively consistent high ambient temperatures, M. molossus should be limited in its ability to use torpor, unlike bats from regions with stronger seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations (Bonaccorso et al, 1992;Cory Toussaint et al, 2010;Speakman and Thomas, 2003).…”

“…These shelters provide greater microclimate stability compared with cavities in trees for example, and such stability is important for thermoregulation and development of infant bats (Bonaccorso et al, 1992;Vonhof and Barclay, 1996;Rodriguez-Durán and Soto-Centeno, 2003). In spite of this critical role that such shelters play in the lives of bats, knowledge on bats inhabiting caves in Brazil can be found in only a few studies (Trajano, 1985(Trajano, , 1995Trajano and Moreira, 1991;Bredt et al, 1999;Trajano and Gimenez, 1998;Esbérard et al, 2005;Faria et al, 2006;Costa et al, 2010).…”

“…In karst areas, isolated karst outcrops have a great many potential shelters and may influence the local species richness of bats (Struebig et al, 2009), and the knowledge of species richness is the basis for any conservation strategy (Racey and Entwistle, 2005;Bernard et al, 2011). In the present study, we aimed to investigate the species richness and abundance of bats in an area in the Carste de Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, which is a karst area and has a large number of rock shelters (caves and crevices) potentially available to bats.…”
