Thermal dynamics of thermoelectric phenomena from frequency resolved methods

Abstract: Understanding the dynamics of thermoelectric (TE) phenomena is important for the detailed knowledge of the operation of TE materials and devices. By analyzing the impedance response of both a single TE element and a TE device under suspended conditions, we provide new insights into the thermal dynamics of these systems. The analysis is performed employing parameters such as the thermal penetration depth, the characteristic thermal diffusion frequency and the thermal diffusion time. It is shown that in both sys… Show more

“…that the conversion efficiencies of segmented unicouple are linearly decreased with increasing the value of contact resistance. In practice, the contact resistance of metal–metal is in the range of 2 to 50 μΩcm 2 and for oxide with metal electrode, e.g., Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 and ZnO with Ag it is about 100 μΩcm 2 at about 1000 K . As a result, the major contribution to the δ magnitude is usually attributed to the oxide‐metal conjunctions.…”

“…Two books, one by Gray (1960) [2] and one by Iordanishvili [4], cover extensively the subject. Recently, Nedelcu et al [21], Min [18] and García-Cañadas [17] have done experimental spectroscopic analysis of thermoelectric systems, which confirm that TE device is equivalent electrically with a capaciNon-Stationary Thermoelectric Generators http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/66421 tance in parallel with TE generator, which has internal electrical resistance. This is confirmed by theoretical papers by Apostol [9][10][11] and Goupil [5].…”

“…Spectroscopy analysis of thermoelectric devices has been performed by García-Cañadas [17] and Gao Min [18]. They have studied thermodynamics of thermoelectric phenomena by frequency-resolved methods, which show that TE devices have a capacitive component that can be exploited to improve performance.…”

“…With this technique, the frequency dependence of the voltage-current ratio across the system is analyzed and then compared to theoretical models. Besides the determination of ZT , it is also possible to gain additional information on the material's thermoelectric properties [20,21,22,23,24]. To evaluate the different characteristics of the sample, measurements are fitted to an equivalent electrical model.…”
