Thermal diffusivity of a SNAB glass system doped with CdS nanocrystals and Nd3+

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis work reports on the thermal diffusivity of the SiO 2 -Na 2 CO 3 -B 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 (SNAB) glass system doped with semiconductor nanocrystals of CdS and Nd 3+ ions. Thermal diffusivity (D) was obtained by the Thermal Lens technique. It is shown that D decreases up to 30% when SNAB is doped with CdS nanocrystals. The effect is discussed in terms of heat transport by phonons as well as interface and surface scattering.

“…Moreover, a study of the thermal properties was performed and revealed that CdS nanoparticles reduce the thermal diffusivity of the samples [14]. Nevertheless there is a lack of data from analysis, based on the Judd-Ofelt Theory, regarding the spectroscopic properties of RE ions embedded in glass systems codoped with semiconductor NCs [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…CdS containing Nd 3+ shows interesting thermal diffusive [1], energy transfer [2], optical spectral [3], photoluminescence [4] and photoconductive [5,6] properties. It is known that impurities play an important role in the above properties due to their local structures and electronic states in the host, which can be conveniently studied by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique.…”
