ZrSiO 4 bulk was prepared by pressureless sintering process and ZrSiO 4 coating was deposited on the SiC f /SiC substrate using air plasma method. The microstructures of ZrSiO 4 bulk and ZrSiO 4 coating are both dense. A preliminary study of a water vapor corrosion test for ZrSiO 4 bulk and ZrSiO 4 coating was performed under the conditions of 1.013×10 5 Pa, 90%H 2 O/10%O 2 , 1300 ℃, and low gas velocity. Results show that some pores appear on the surface of the ZrSiO 4 bulk. The main crystal phase is ZrO 2 and the weight loss of ZrSiO 4 bulk is only 0.236 mg/cm 2 after corrosion. The ZrSiO 4 coating peels off from the substrate after 109 h. The number and intensity of diffraction peaks of ZrO 2 in the coating increase, and the major crystal phase of the coating is still ZrSiO 4. A porous microstructure accompanied with cracks is observed on the surface of ZrSiO 4 coating after corrosion.

High‐temperature, high‐velocity water vapor (steam‐jet) exposures were conducted on Y2O3, Y2SiO5, Y2Si2O7, and SiO2 for 60 hours at 1400°C. Volatility of Y2O3 was not observed. Phase‐pure Y2SiO5 exhibited SiO2 loss forming Y2O3 and porosity. A mixed porous and dense Y2SiO5 layer formed on the surface of Y2Si2O7 due to SiO2 depletion. The mechanisms and kinetics of the reaction between SiO2 and H2O(g) to form Si(OH)4(g) from Y2SiO5, Y2Si2O7, and SiO2 are discussed.

The need for higher efficiencies and performance in gas-turbine engines that propel aircraft in the air, and generate electricity on land, is pushing the operating temperatures of the engines to unprecedented levels. Replacing some of the current hot-section metallic components with ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) is making that possible. A high-temperature ceramic coatings system, that includes environmental-barrier coatings (EBCs), are needed to protect CMCs. However, these coatings undergo degradation in the highly hostile environment of the gas-turbine engine consisting of a combination of high gas temperatures, pressures, and velocities. In addition, there is the ubiquitous presence of steam (a combustion by-product) and occasional ingestion of calcia-magnesia-aluminosilicates (CMASs) in the form of dust, sand, or ash from the environment. Steam can cause corrosion of EBCs, and the molten CMAS deposits can react with the EBCs resulting in their failure. This article provides a perspective on the understanding of these degradation mechanisms, and possible approaches, guided by that understanding, for mitigating the degradation. An outlook on the future challenges and opportunities is presented.
